3 days break from school, started to ponder what i wan to be after graduation. still not too sure abt what i wan to do. its either i dun like to do or i’m not qualified to do. but definitely, postgrad immediately aft graduation is not the way for me. i would like a break from school…
how many actually like what u are studying now? or what you are studying now is really your first choice??
10 years ago, wafer industry, construction industry and various engineering related industries starts to boom… singapore needs lots and lots of engineers to take up the positions in these industries. universities increased the vacancies and reduced the cut-off point for engineering courses so that they can produce as much engineers as possible to meet the industries demand. for the better of the economy, my school had shifted its attention from their original specialisation such as metallurgy and inspectiion techniques to a course heavily focus on wafer manufacturing.
this induced a problem where students have limited choices in their courses. for a typical A-levels students who have interest courses like medicine, business, sciences and etc in local universities but do not meet their cut-off point, an alternative would be to pursue an overseas degree. if the student is not rich enough to do so, more likely he end up in an engineering course. i have classmates who are like this… and they studied engineering just because they want a degree. they interest could be in deejaying, chemistry, business, arts, hospitality and etc, but not engineering.
there are cases where people who dont work in the field they are trained in. however, what if people who had totally no interest in engineering, but pursuing an engineering degree and working as an engineer… we cannot rule out this possibility as not everybody gets their desired job. wont this pose a threat to people if the construction of our buildings involves engineers who are uninterested? wont a person who is more interested in their job do a better job?
instead of making the intake of students to meet the industry demands and the economy of the country, should we allow students to choose what they wishes to study? Should we only determine the student’s interest in a particular course by judging their cut-off points only? if not, how can we different such students of genuine interest in the course?
